The 2012 Monterey Bay Regional Business Plan Competition has established separate tracks for Main-Street, Student and Venture-Play companies.

A Venture-Play company will return 10X the investor's investment to him or her within three to five years.  In order to do that, it is usually "scalable," that is, it can grow rapidly across the state, across the nation and, most likely, across the globe.  So, a software company is easily scalable, as long as it can be adapted to different languages and cultures (see our friends at the Monterey Institute of International Studies and also Monterey Language Services.)

In contrast, a Main-Street Business might be a great idea for a town or region, but not for the whole nation.  This is often because the business is personality driven or appeals to a specific region's demographics or even geography.  So a business that thrives putting people into canoes on the Russian River and then shuttling them back in buses might do great in Sonoma County, but probably won't translate all that well on a large scale across the country.

That said, both types of companies are important for job creation.  In the 2012 competition the cash prize for the Main-Street category is $5,000;  the prize package for the Venture-Play category $50,000 in cash and services.
