CHRIS KHAN
Chris Khan is the principal of Khan-Bernier Consulting, a business services consultancy to private start-up companies and government entities. Chris has worked with incubator clients for 5 years and served the last two years as associate director of the Marina Technology Cluster. He has consulted in the development of software design for Washington and California-based companies. He also advises program development and coordination for the School of Information Technology and Communications Design at CSU Monterey Bay. Chris is a standards research fellow for the Department of Defense in Seaside, California. He holds a master’s degree in Management and Information Technology from CSUMB, where he graduated Cum Laude and with distinction in his major.
Chris’s background includes more than 18 years experience in the semiconductor industry in the areas of production, engineering, management. As CEO of Epitaxy, Inc., Chris had complete profit and loss responsibility for all aspects of the company. He also managed environmental health and safety facility upgrades in compliance with rapidly changing federal, state, and local regulations while maintaining and improving production quality ad quantity. He successfully positioned and prepared the business for acquisition by LG of Korea. A native English speaker, Chris is also proficient in French, Spanish and Mandarin.
Adam Davis
Adam Davis has more than 15 years experience in project work, management and completion in the building trades and two years in incubator facilities, grant and client management and administration. His experience positions him uniquely to be able to manage facilities and administration, as well as meet client needs for BBS projects.
Adam's experience and responsibilities include all office system creation and management; accounts receivable and payable; purchase order management; client tracking, interface and management; grant tracking and reporting; and budget tracking and reporting. Adam manages tenant processing, intake, billing and auxiliary room rental, including billing and payment.
Outside of office and grant administration, Adam procures and manages vendor contracts for office equipment, supplies and services, as well as maintains relationships with landlords and services from client departments.
SUSAN J. DUGGAN
Susan is the senior strategist for The Language Flagship, an advanced foreign language learning initiative sponsored by the Department of Defense. In 2009 she assumed the interim position of chief executive officer for The Language Flagship Group, a newly formed not-for-profit expansion of the Flagship efforts. From 1993-1998 Susan served as the senior policy consultant to the U.S. Department of Defense's National Security Education Program. In 1992, she co-founded and managed an international education agency with program development throughout Eastern Europe and Latin America.
A Fulbright Scholar to Germany and Fellow of the Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation, Susan holds a Ph.D. and Masters in Education/Political Science, and a B.A. in Anthropology from Stanford University. She also earned a Masters in Political Science/International Relations from Université Laval. She has served on several advisory boards of Silicon Valley start-up companies. Dr. Duggan is conversant in five languages; fluent in German and French.ANITA SALEM
Anita Salem is the founder of SalemSystems Inc., a user research and design company. Since 1995, Anita has helped organizations align their product strategies with business goals and user needs. Working with companies as diverse as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Cisco Systems, HomeGrocer.com, the City of Seattle, and the State of Washington, Anita leads organizations in the creation of products and services that are useful and easy to use. Anita is also a lecturer in user-experience design at the University of Washington and for corporate clients and adjunct faculty at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.
PATRICK REILLY
Patrick Reilly is an intellectual property attorney, an IP rights marketing consultant and the founder of the Intellectual Property Society (www.ipsociety.net), an association focused on enriching the public discourse regarding intellectual property rights or "IP rights." Patrick believes that IP rights are fundamentally necessary to attract the financial resources needed to most effectively provide the benefits of technology and artistic energy for the common good. He argues that the public should be more actively involved in defining and limiting the scope and nature of intellectual property protection. Patrick is a member of the California State Bar and the United States Federal Patent Bar.
DENISE RYAN
As Founder of Santa Cruz, California-based Blue Marble Marketing, Denise is widely recognized for her ability to successfully launch new ventures. Denise's strength is her capacity to quickly understand a new venture's formidable goals and to partner with CEO's in developing effective market strategies.
Denise's background includes VP Worldwide Marketing, Director of Channel Marketing, International Major Accounts Marketing and Line of Business Product Marketing for several companies including Oracle, MicroPro International, The Santa Cruz Operation and Stallion Technology. Prior to that, Denise served as Executive Director of Entrepreneurial Services, for The Enterprise Network, one of Silicon Valley's most successful non-profit entrepreneurial advisory and incubator services.
Denise serves on the Board of Advisors for Women in Technology International (WITI), where she contributed to the establishment of the WITI Invent Center at Smith College. Denise also serves on the Board of Directors for Silicon Valley Association of Startup Entrepreneurs (SVASE), the Marketing Committee of MIT/Stanford VLAB and the Advisory Board of the Marina Technology Cluster in Monterey, California. Denise is a frequent speaker and moderator and has published several articles on effective marketing strategies and programs.
JIM ROBBINS
Jim Robbins is a principal in Business Cluster Development (BCD) and has significant experience in incubation strategy, development and management; corporate innovation and incubation; technology transfer and commercialization; and entrepreneurial programs and new business formation. Jim has 30 years experience in the fields of new business formation, organizational design, technology development and management, business operations and law. In addition to starting his own business to assist communities in the development of sector-focused incubators, he worked for Digital Equipment Corporation and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Jim is co-founder of the Software Business Cluster, the first software incubator in California, and the Environmental Business Cluster, winner of the National Business Incubation Association’s 2008 Incubator-of-the-Year Award. Other incubators that BCD has helped to create include the Women's Technology Cluster, the Communications Technology Cluster and the Foundation Incubator. Jim is also past executive director of the Panasonic Incubator and is a principal in Panasonic Ventures, a $100 Million dollar investment fund.
Jim is a frequent speaker on new business formation, early stage venture funding and sector-focused incubation. He has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Inc. Magazine, Entrepreneur Magazine, Business Week, Red Herring Online, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Silicon Valley and San Francisco Business Journals, and the San Jose Mercury News.
Camille Smith
Camille is founder and CEO of Work in Progress Coaching which specializes in helping leaders and teams increase their performance and productivity. Camille's view is that, although people are committed and want to produce results, without a sold relationship foundation, the best-laid plans are easily erode by the daily grind as well as unforeseen circumstances.
Before founding Work in Progress Coaching, Camille worked in operations, sales and product development at both large corporations and start-ups. She has worked with Nokia, Bickson Seeton & company, Goodyear Tire & Rubber, Guinness Brewing Worldwide, Nutrasweet, and Campbell's Soup. She worked for 10 years with an international training and development organizations as vice president of international operations, project manager, staff trainer, customer service manager and workshop leader. She spent 10 years teaching English and designing cirricullum for a ground-breaking, alternative high school within the Columbus Public School system, recently recognized by the College Board as an exemplary advanced-placement school.
